The Tarzan chest

1940+

This chest belonged to a young man working on a steamboat in the 1940s who truly believed Tarzan existed somewhere in the jungle. He owned a Tarzan story he read often and kept safe in the chest.

When he opened the chest at night to fall asleep, by the light of the oil lamp inside it, his dream always began the same way: the sound of jungle birds, the ground cool underfoot, and suddenly a light appearing with the vision of a native shaman asking him to leave.

And every time, looking down at his bare feet, the boy realized he was Tarzan again for one more night.
